Nawrooz - Happy New Year 1386
March 20, 2007

Yes, the Solar New Year, which is observed by Afghanistan and Iran and who knows who else, begins tomorrow. It will be Afghan New Year 1386. The Dari word for New Year is "Nawrooz."

In the words of one of my counterparts at the ministry:

"Let us hope and pray that this new year brings peace and stability to Afghanistan."

Let us hope, indeed. Inshallah.

From another Afghan colleague:

"I hope that the NEW SOLAR YEAR will bring peace, security, and warmth for the development and gender equality throughout the country. I hope this New Year leads the country towards a very bright and prosperous future."

Let's hear it for gender equality in Afghanistan!!!!

No work for three days beginning tomorrow! I tell ya, this working six days a week is really getting me down... this break is going to be awesome... as long as the Internet is working...
