The purpose of this fair is to both raise awareness within the Sanchez school community about available public health programs and services, and to provide an opportunity for Sanchez students to attend career workshops.
The primary support provided by the ACEE-VISTA was to coordinate the recruitment and participation of local health organizations and business professionals, and to promote awareness of the fair in the school community.
In undertaking this project, the VISTA works with more than 30 local health organizations and business professionals, recruiting their support and arranging logistics for their participation in the fair. Additionally, the ACEE VISTA develops printed materials to be disseminated to children's homes, in the school and throughout the Sanchez school community.
Jennifer San Pedro (VISTA 1999-2000) says:
"Mrs. Maldonado, the parent specialist, Mrs. Perry, the
counselor, the Vice Principal and myself worked on this
project. It is a very complex project and requires plenty
of communication and organization."
"Everything I did for this project is filed under 'Health/Career Fair'. There you will find a map of the cafeteria for the setting-up of tables, a 'To do' list, flyers in Spanish and English, and fax papers with the numbers to participating organizations. If you are in charge of contacting these organizations, call them instead of faxing them. You can look up the numbers in the yellow or blue pages if they are not on the fax papers. Call them at least two months ahead of time, make follow-up calls a month before, two weeks before, and two days before."
"Find out how many tables, plugs, extension cords, and volunteers they need or will be bringing. Let Mrs. Maldonado know so she can place the order for chairs and tables. "
"STUFFE, a life size doll with life size organs, can be ordered through the Children's Museum just call and reserve it. At the Austin's Children's Museum, tell them who you are, what school you are with and what STUFFE will be used for, and ask whether they can waive the fee. Usually you have to write a letter stating just that. There should be a copy of the letter in that folder as well. Take it in or fax it when you pick up the doll. You also want someone who has a very large car or truck to pick up STUFFE, it is enormous and heavy! The day before the event, make sure you have printed out the table tents for the participating organizations, and have name tags for the guest speakers."
"Last year, AmeriCorps helped out tremendously, they wrote
a schedule of events, set-up and covered the tables, and
helped with the concessions and other tasks. I thought it
was a successful program."
